Liberal Democrat Peers amend Article 50 again on second reading

The Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords have been leading the close scrutiny of Article 50 and the Conservative Government's rush to take us out of Europe.

The Liberal Democrat Peers have three goals:

  • Protect Britain's membership of the single market
  • Protect the rights of EU citizens in the UK
  • Give the people the final say on the Brexit deal

The House of Lords can influence the decisions of the Government by tabling amendments to bills coming through from the House of Commons. Unfortunately the Labour Party leadership in the House of Lords does not support Britain retaining strong ties with the European Union and went so far as to support leaving the Single Market.

Dick Newby, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the house of Lords, emailed supporters this morning:

"So, as only one of our three principal goals in the Lords were met, last night we made the rare decision to vote against the Article 50 bill at Third Reading. Once again, the Leadership of Labour in the Lords chose not to support us and the Bill now returns to the Commons for the final stage of the process."

You can help make the case to MPs and the Government not to remove this amendment by adding your name to our petition and by tweeting Theresa May using the hashtag #RightToStay and asking her to guarantee EU citizens right to stay. You can also write to your MP or email to support Parliament having the final say on Europe using the link below.
