Brighton & Hove Lib Dems moved by Black Lives Matter Protests in Brighton

14 Jun 2020

Ben Thomas, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Brighton Kemptown, was among the protesters marching in Brighton yesterday. He said:

"It was inspiring to be amongst thousands of people marching in solidarity of Black Lives Matter in Brighton yesterday. Listening to the various speakers was truly moving and we have to make sure we seize upon this moment to deliver real, lasting change.

"In Brighton & Hove, we consider ourselves a liberal and diverse city, but all too often that isn't reflected in our institutions. I really hope the council now take time to reflect upon their own lack of diversity. If you look at the makeup of the council, it's virtually a whitewash - even though the BAME community makes up over 10% of our local population.

"If we want to really tackle this issue effectively, we need to increase representation in all levels of our institutions, locally and nationally."
