Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats Unite for Europe
Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats travelled up to London to take part in the Unite for Europe March that marks the beginning of the end of our membership of the European Union - at least if we let Theresa May and her Government get their way.
The Liberal Democrats travelled up to London in a Big Lemon bus chartered by Peter Deadman together with members of other parties and the Brighton and Hove for Europe facebook Group which is co-ordinating pro-Europe activities with their Europe Corner which takes over a corner of Brighton every Saturday.
Police estimated between 50,000 and 100,000 people took part in the march ending in Parliament Square. Criticisms were made of the lack of media coverage particularly by the BBC with the Independent noting that the coverage confused the minute of silence paid to respect the victoms of the Westminster terror attack with the real purpose of the march which was to protest against the Government's Hard Brexit policy. The date of the march was also the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome which created the organisation that was to become the European Union.
Theresa May is expected to begin the process of leaving the EU in a few days and is pursuing a "Hard Brexit" policy where we will leave the single market and risk our trade links with the 27 countries we are leaving behind.
The Unite for Europe march is expected to be just the beginning of nationwide protests that must take place as the recklessness of the Conservative policy becomes apparent as negotiations begin.
You can support the struggle for maintaining closer ties with Europe by posting this article on social media and we encourage you also to register with us if you live in Brighton and Hove and consider joining the Liberal Democrats from as little as £12 a year to help us stand up to this reckless Tory Government.
